    Trivia
Boman Irani follows Zoroastrianism and hails from the Gujarati speaking Parsi community of Mumbai, Maharashtra.
Boman Irani is a Bollywood actor. He shot to fame with the highly acclaimed film MUNNABHAI MBBS (2003). He’s known for his versatility through a wide range of supporting roles in several notable films like MAIN HOON NA (2004), VEER ZAARA (2004), PAGE 3 (2005), WAQT – RACE AGAINST TIME (2005), BEING CYRUS (2006), LAGE RAHO MUNNABHAI (2006), KHOSLA KA GHOSLA (2006), DON – THE CHASE BEGINS AGAIN (2006), DOSTANA (2008) and 3 IDIOTS (2009).

    Early Life

Boman Irani was born on 1st October 1962 into a Parsi family in Mumbai. He used to reside in Nagpada Sanvi near Mumbai Central. He graduated from Mithibai College in Mumbai and later did a Polytechnic Diploma course.

After working as a room service staff at Taj Mahal Palace, Boman, later, joined his mother at their ancestral bakery shop in South Mumbai. Thereafter, he opened an ‘Uncle Chips’ franchise at Dadar, Mumbai. But due to unprofitable business, Boman shut the franchise around the year 1986.

In the year 1987, Boman Irani ventured into what he still believes is his biggest passion – photography, part from acting, of course. From the Miss India's to top models, from advertising campaigns to portfolios, Boman was better off as a professional photographer.

It was only by virtue of being a photographer that Boman Irani came in contact with the world of theatre.

    Theatre/Television

Boman Irani had always been active in theatre during his school and college days. After been trained under acting coach Hansraj Siddhia around 1981-83, Boman plunged into the world of professional theatre. Boman was introduced to theatre personality Alyque Padamsee by Shiamak Davar.

With a cameo, his earliest theatrical appearance, in Padamsee's ‘Roshni’ at the Regional Theatre in Versova, Mumbai; and a double role opposite Pearl Padamsee in television serial Family Ties in 1996, Boman had begun his wonderful acting stint.

Boman soon made a mark with the television serial ‘Mahatma Vs Gandhi’, where he played the role of Gandhi which was earlier turned down by actor Darshan Jariwala.

Television, and particularly ad films, happened by chance. A screen test for an ad film, which Boman was hesitant to do, was going on. Boman just happened to drop in to meet a friend of his. Now, due to the drop out of the selected model a day before the shoot, the ad-makers were in about testing almost anybody. Boman Irani had been one of them.

And there he was – approved! Boman's zany comic sense was an instant success and he went on to do ad films for several products such as Fanta, Limca, Bata, Polo, Smyle Cough Syrup, Kinetic Honda, Lazor shaving blades, KrackJack biscuits and many more - over a 100 TV commercials. The KrackJack ads were highly popular.

He hosted the game show 'Bollywood Ka Boss' around 2007-08 and later got on with hosting the show, 'The Pitch', which is currently being aired on UTV Bloomberg.

With over forty plays to his credit (Boman was the lead in fifteen of them), Boman Irani, even today, is one of the most sought after theatre actors in Mumbai. Though, it took a backseat due to his foray into Bollywood in the year 2000.

    Bollywood

Boman Irani’s first film was Ram Madhvani's LET’S TALK (2003). Boman played the lead character in the film, Nikhil, for which he won a lot of acclaim. He was also there in the Rahul Bose directed EVERYBODY SAY’S I’M FINE (2003) as Mr. Mittal, a cameo.

    2003-2004

Boman Irani’s major Bollywood debut was in the Ram Gopal Varma film DARNA MANA HAI (2003). Boman played a hotel owner who’s out to cure the deadly addiction of smoking. Boman was highly noteworthy in the small role which was extremely significant for the film.

Boman Irani soon shot to fame with the film MUNNA BHAI M.B.B.S (2003). Directed by Rajkumar Hirani and starring Sanjay Dutt and Arshad Warsi, Boman played the role of Dr. J. C. Asthana, an eccentric doctor. The film was highly acclaimed and Boman Irani’s performance was immensely applauded. It’s the most memorable role of Boman Irani till date. MUNNA BHAI M.B.B.S (2003) was the most critically acclaimed film of the year 2003.

Then he played a diamond dealer in BOOM (2003) that slipped away due to the film been extremely bold and sleazy. But, Boman Irani was immensely liked once again as the wacky and forgetful college principal in Farah Khan’s super-hit MAIN HOON NA (2004) starring Shahrukh Khan.

Boman was then seen in Farhan Akhtar’s commercially disappointing but critically acclaimed LAKSHYA (2004) where he played the role of Karan’s (Hrithik) father. Later he was seen in the successful Yash Chopra romantic-drama VEER ZAARA (2004) starring Shahrukh Khan and Preity Zinta where Boman played the role of a Pakistani politician who’s also Preity’s father in the film.

    2005

In the year 2005, Boman Irani was seen in as many as nine films. Boman played, Deepak Suri, an editor of a newspaper in Madhur Bhandarkar’s national award winning film, PAGE 3 (2005), with precision. Boman’s role as the zany yet emotional dad of Priyanka Chopra in Vipul Amrutlal Shah’s successful drama, WAQT – RACE AGAINST TIME (2005), starring Akshay Kumar, Amitabh Bachchan, and Shefali Shah, was very well received.

In MY WIFE’S MURDER (2005), Boman played a police inspector, Tejpal Randhawa, who’s assigned to investigate the case of a dead woman who actually is the ‘missing’ wife of Anil Kapoor in the film. His crazy-minister’s act in Anees Bazmee’s blockbuster comedy NO ENTRY (2005) which starred a plethora of A-list actors including Salman Khan, Anil Kapoor, Fardeen Khan, Lara Dutta, Bipasha Basu, Celina Jaitley and Esha Deol, was a highpoint.

His next appearance in the film KAL YESTERDAY AND TOMMOROW (2005) and even in Dev Anand’s MR. PRIME MINISTER (2005) didn’t matter as the films were blanked out by the audience. Even his apt portrayal of the ‘simple minded-childlike but optimistic’ pizza delivery boy in Sujoy Ghosh’s HOME DELIVERY (2005), starring Vivek Oberoi, went vain as the film failed miserably.

He played a public prosecutor well enough in the critically acclaimed MAINE GANDHI KO NAHIN MARA (2005), but it was the veteran Anupam Kher who stole the show with his stellar performance. Yet, Boman was right there; even in Rohan Sippy’s averagely successful film, BLUFFMASTER (2005), where he played Dr. Bhalerao who facilitates in leading the central character, Abhishek Bachchan, into a semblance of realty.

    2006

In the English language film, BEING CYRUS (2006), starring Saif Ali Khan, Naseeruddin Shah, Dimple Kapadia, Simone Singh, Boman Irani performed a class act. His grumpy negative character of Farokh Sethna in this psychological drama revolving around a dysfunctional Parsi family stood out.

SHAADI SE PEHLE (2006), PYARE MOHAN (2006) and I SEE YOU (2006) – all of which he starred in - failed at the Box-Office. But, 2006 was a phenomenal year for Boman Irani, as his portrayal of Lucky Singh, in the follow-up to his MUNNA BHAI MBBS (2003) success - LAGE RAHO MUNNA BHAI (2006) – was another highly applauded act. A Sardar property dealer who’s outwardly hard but subtly soft within - Boman perfectly, subtly slipped into the character. The film was a very huge success commercially and critically as well and became a trendsetter of sorts. Same for his portrayal of Kishen Khurana, a diabolic property dealer in Delhi, in Dibakar Banerjee national award winning film of, KHOSLA KA GHOSLA (2006). Boman was instrumental for this small-budgeted film’s success. Even his negative character of Dsilva/Vardhan in Farhan Akhtar’s DON – THE CHASE BEGINS AGAIN (2006), starring Shahrukh Khan and Priyanka Chopra, was very well received and the film was a huge hit.

    2007

In 2007, Boman Irani starred in four Bollywood films and also a short film. In the short film POSITIVE, which was about HIV/AIDS awareness, Boman was cast opposite Shabana Azmi. POSITIVE was directed by Farhan Akhtar.

In Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s EKLAVYA: THE ROYAL GUARD (2007), Boman played a Patriarch with negative shades. This movie was chosen as India's official entry to the Oscars for the Best Foreign Film for the year 2007, but was a commercial failure. In HONEYMOON TRAVELS PVT. LTD. (2007), produced by Farhan Akhtar and directed by debutante Reema Kagti, Boman starred in this multi-starrer comedy-drama opposite Shabana Azmi. The film was an average success.

In Sajid Khan’s HEYY BABYY (2007), Boman Irani plays the emotional father of Vidya Balan's character. Starring Akshay Kumar, Riteish Deshmukh, Fardeen Khan, HEYY BABYY (2007) was one of the biggest hits of the year 2007. While in DHAN DHANA DHAN GOAL (2007), starring John Abraham, Bipasha Basu, Arshad Warsi, Boman played the role of a football coach who helps a local football club in England to fight against all odds. The film was met with a tepid response.

The film wasn’t really a commercial success, but gained a cult following among the audience. His KISMAT KONNECTION (2008), starring Shahid Kapoor and Vidya Balan, was an average success.

But Boman Irani’s most significant film in 2008 was DOSTANA (2008), produced by Karan Johar. Starring Abhishek Bachchan, John Abraham and Priyanka Chopra, Boman played a gay editor of a fashion magazine. His performance was very well appreciated which bolstered the film’s success.

    2009

2009 saw Boman Irani appearing in as many as seven films of which he did cameos in films LUCK BY CHANCE (2009) and KAMBAKKHT ISHQ (2009). PERFECT MISMATCH (2009) and FRUIT & NUT (2009) went unnoticed.

Boman starred in LITTLE ZIZOU (2009) and 99 (2009), which were small-budgeted films but highly appreciated. The films failed commercially, but gained a cult status.

But it was with Rajkumar Hirani’s 3 IDIOTS (2009) Boman Irani touched greater heights. Starring Bollywood megastar Aamir Khan, Sharman Joshi, R Madhavan and Kareena Kapoor, Boman played a strict and stubborn college principal. The class act won him his first Filmfare Award - award for the Best Supporting Role. He had been nominated thrice before, first been for the Best Comedian for his role in MUNNABHAI MBBS (2003). 3 IDIOTS (2009) became one of the most critically acclaimed and commercially successful films ever in Bollywood. Boman was altogether on a new level after this film.

    2010-Present

Boman Irani’s first release in 2010 was Shyam Benegal’s political satire, WELL DONE ABBA (2010), where he played the central character of Armaan Ali, a Muslim driver in Mumbai who takes a month’s leave from his employer in order to hunt for a groom for his daughter (Minissha Lamba). When Armaan takes too long for it, his employer decides to sack him. The film wasn’t meant for the masses, but it received good critical reception and went on to win the National Film Award for Best Film on social Issues.

In HUM TUM AUR GHOST (2010), starring Arshad Warsi and Dia Mirza, Boman plays a ghost whom only Arshad Warsi could come across. This fantasy film failed miserably at the Box-Office.

HOUSEFULL (2010) was the latest film to star Boman Irani. Directed by Sajid Khan and produced by Sajid Nadiadwala, this slapstick comedy had Boman playing the role of a Gujarati father to Lara Dutta’s character in the film. Boman impressed everyone with his terrific performance. The film also starred Akshay Kumar, Riteish Deshmukh, Deepika Padukone, Jiah Khan, and Arjun Rampal. HOUSEFULL (2010) was super-hit at the Box-Office.

    Upcoming Films

Boman Irani’s next release would be with Farhan Akhtar’s DON 2, the sequel to DON: THE CHASE BEGINS AGAIN (2006), where he would be playing the role of Vardhaan again. Starring alongside Shahrukh Khan, Priyanka Chopra, Lara Dutta and Kunal Kapoor, this film is slated to release in the later half of 2011.

Boman has been signed on for Priyadarshan’s multi-starrer action film TEZ, which would also star Anil Kapoor and Ajay Devgn. He would also be dubbing for Nikhil Advani’s animated flick DELHI SAFARI.

    Personal Life
