Um, So Who Watches The Watchmen?

*All of geekdom raises its hand!!!*

Well, seems like the reviews for the Watchmen movie coming out next week are off to a good start. I mean, dayum! Check out this early one from IGN.com's AU affiliate. The folks at IGN down under are usually very hard to please, so to get such a glowing review from them is a big deal. Especially since there was just a tad bit of snarkiness coming out of their corner regarding Zack Snyder's effrontery to even consider making a movie out of Alan Moore's masterpiece. A big chunk of snark came from Moore himself, to be fair, which only added to every critic's arsenal in the years leading up to this release. Guess they must be feeling a little less chummy now.

Anyway, you can read the review here. I expect IGN's main site to have their own review up shortly.

On a related note, Rotten Tomatoes is already tabulating reviews from around the world. So far the film's doing pretty impressive with an 80% freshness rating on the tomatometer. Of course, for those who know RT's history, expect this number to fluctuate wildly in the next few days. Although I suspect it will still be pretty high come Friday of next week.

So, what this really means is that my excitement level for this flick--palpable before--is now officially THROUGH THE ROOF!

And don't worry about me. I don't over hype myself up for movies. Even though I am excited, I know all too well the danger of hyping yourself silly over a movie that has no chance of ever matching your expectations (see: The Phantom Menace). I will go into the theater expecting a simple movie with simple aspirations (blatant lie).

A simple movie that just so happens to KICK the ASS of most every other superhero movie that has come out in the last 8 years! Or, at least, that's what I'm hearing. :)

Anyway, as if you're not getting enough promotion from me to see this movie, here is the trailer for those of you who haven't the foggiest clue what the heck I'm talking about. Keep in mind that this is based on a comic book series that came out in the mid-80s. So if you're not into that sort of thing, just pass this one by. Until I see the film for myself, I can't comment on the accessibility of it to non-fans.

And to one of my blog readers: nope, still no vampires or werewolves in this. Sorry, Kim! :)

That New Quentin Tarantino Flick . . .

OMG, I'm so excited to see this movie! Quentin Tarantino's next flick is coming out late this summer, and the first trailer just aired this week. The film's called Inglourious Basterds [sic] starring Brad Pitt, amongst many other notable faces. At first I was put off by the idea of Pitt being in a Tarantino production. For some reason, the two didn't seem a right fit. I like Brad's work, don't get me wrong, but really?

Anyway, this trailer has proved me wrong. I can see the genius behind casting Mr. Jolie now. I should have known to leave it to my man Quentin to know what the hell he's doing! And, hey, from a purely marketing viewpoint it works as well. I mean, how many more women will turn up now? Probably a heck of a lot more than usual for Tarantino, I can tell you that much.

    Anyway, here's your trailer:

The film is looking like a cross between a typical World War II Nazi flick, and a Spaghetti Western. Yeah, imagine that. Quirky, but we are talking QT here. I mean, what'd you expect? (heh, heh)Source URL: https://bollywoodsexygirls2012.blogspot.com/search/label/Movie%20news

Watchmen Viral Trailer - Oh Hells Yeah!!!

As seems to be the trend these days, a few viral trailers have been making their way online in anticipation of the official release of the hotly anticipated Watchmen film, coming out exactly one month from now. Viral trailers, for those who don't know, are part of a genre film's marketing campaign, illustrating often secondary and background info about the main story with footage not actually a part of the official film. For the movie Cloverfield, the viral trailers showed the events leading up to the first appearance of the giant monster.

Anyway, here is a cool one about the Keene Act, a fictitious Congressional bill passed in the alternate history version of 1977 in which the Watchmen universe takes place. The Keene Act made vigilantism illegal, thereby branding public heroes like the Watchmen outlaws overnight. It goes without saying that this is probably only of interest to fans of the graphic novel, since newcomers not familiar with The Watchmen probably won't get the context before seeing the film.

Damn, I so want to watch this movie RIGHT NOW!!! March 6th can't come soon enough.Source URL: https://bollywoodsexygirls2012.blogspot.com/search/label/Movie%20news

Yay . . . Er, Whaa???

I tried to avoid the Superbowl this weekend as:

    1) I'm not really a fan to begin with; and

    2) This year's match up seemed particularly boring (unlike last year's).

Still, I did watch it, and I did catch the commercials. I was especially pumped to see the teaser for the new G.I. Joe movie, which is yet another whoring of a beloved 80s cartoon franchise from my childhood.

Thing is, for all the heaping amounts of cool and kick-assery going on in these brief 30 seconds, you'd be really hard-pressed to say this is the G.I. Joe franchise until the name comes up at the end. WTF? I mean, it looks great, don't get me wrong. But it looks like a generic Michael Bay movie. Which, when it's Michael Bay, is still full blast, high-octane, peddle-to-the-meddle movie making at its best.

Anyway, I guess that's why it's called a "teaser." It's just supposed to give you a whiff of what's in store. I just hope that whiff does not turn out to be dog poo when all is said and done. You can't get that smell out for DAYS, I'm telling you.

Oh, and here's the teaser trailer I'm talking about:

I have to say the Baroness is looking deliciously evil and yummy! And Scarlett is pretty nice on the eyes. And hey, look, it's Heavy Duty!!! But of course, all eyes go to Snake Eyes -- my man Ray Park doing his kung-fu acrobatics! Here he kinda looks like Spider-Man, though. What's up with that? I mean Snake Eyes does indeed do a lot of flips and shit, but not quite up to this kind of scale. Damn those super mutant movies of late!!!!

For those of you not raised on 80s animated goodness, or who watched Rainbow Brite or My Little Pony instead . . . er, move along. Nothing to see here. :)Source URL: https://bollywoodsexygirls2012.blogspot.com/search/label/Movie%20news

Has Someone Been Raiding My DVD Cabinet?

As some of you know, I'm a huge China buff. I love the country, the people, the language, the art, the music, the literature, etc. And I especially love its movies--both the dramatic and the wu-xia varieties. I like the serious and the action-y stuff alike!

Recently, however, I've been expanding my tastes to include other Asian cultures. Japan was a natural, followed by Korea. But now I'm totally hooked on India, too! While still not a terribly huge fan of Bollywood-type movies, I do in fact enjoy the music a lot. I've been on a serious Indian DVD watching fix since the beginning of this year, collecting the ones I like and scoping the music of the films from various sources both on the web and in the stores.

Well, seems like someone has made a movie just for me, and it's being called: Chandni Chowk To China. It's sort of a zany East meets . . . er, further East mismatch. Bollywood meets Chinese Kung-fu comedy -- a wickedly fun looking actioner in the vein of Stephen Chow! I had no idea this movie was being made, but now I MUST watch it when it hits stateside. Thank god I live in NYC, where I always have access to limited release art-house and foreign films. Sweet!

Check out the trailer for yourself. Oh, and the movie will have Gordon Liu playing the villain. You don't get any more awesome than having the original Master Killer of the 36 Chambers in your movie. I'd pay full admission just on this fact alone!

Box Set Dilemma -- And More Fraggles!

Those of you reading this thing semi-regularly may be aware of my recent run-in with Fraggle Rock related issues. If not, click here and here for a refresher. Seems I can 't get away from the little buggers now. And to make matters worse, I just learned of a GARGANTUAN box set release of the entire show on DVD!

That's 20 discs of Fraggle mayhem, folks! I mean, my god, how tempting *is* this? And it's not really that bad of a price for such a huge haul -- only 90 bucks on Amazon.com. I want so badly to ask for this for Christmas, but there are so many box sets that, to my chagrin, I've also discovered on Amazon. It must be that time of year I suppose, because already my bank account is screaming at me.

    Case in point:

    Exhibit A

    Exhibit B

Seriously, how can I resist? The Planet of the Apes complete movie collection is especially sweet because it is on Blu-ray. But then, Batman: The Animated Series is the greatest cartoon show of all time.

Surely the solution is simple, no? I must BUY THEM ALL!!!!

Haha, no. I wish I could, but I can't. If I really, really could only choose one . . . I'd have to go with my buddy, the Dark Knight.

    Yeah, that's what I'll do.

    And yet . . .

Seriously, WTF?

Because Hollywood can't seem to come up with actual new ideas these days, more news that TPTB are not content to leave my cherished 80s memories intact. The Hollywood Reporter revealed today details to remake the 1985 cult hit, The Last Dragon. Originally conceived and produced by Motown head honcho extraordinaire, Berry Gordy, the film was about a young martial artist living in Harlem who seeks ultimate harmony with his art by obtaining the title of "The Last Dragon." Standing in his way to obtaining this coveted goal is Sho'nuff, the self-proclaimed "Shogun of Harlem," played by the late Julius Carry. It's camp, to be sure, but it was a good, fun flick for its time.

The Reporter also announced that Sam Jackson was in likely talks to portray the character of Sho'nuff this time around, with no word yet on who would play the lead. I hope like the original they get an unknown, real martial artist. Because this will be a modern update, I'm sure they'll eventually go with a mixed martial artist. I'm plenty sick of the whole MMA craze that has been sweeping the nation as of late, but this is the way things are today so I can't complain too loudly. I'd rather they'd get a gong-fu practitioner, though I'd settle for the ubiquitous Taekwondo since it is flashier on film. Capoeira would be ideal, imo, and would more easily incorporate into Brazilian jujitsu if they plan to go the MMA route.

I'm not so sure how happy I am to see Sam in the role. Although, on second thought, I guess he really is the best candidate for what is essentially a loud-mouthed, over-the-top caricature (on purpose). I just wish they left the movie alone to begin with. It's a cult classic for a reason--i.e., it doesn't NEED to be remade!

This update is set to coincide with the 50th anniversary of Motown Records' founding, with Berry Gordy's son, Kerry, onboard as one of the producers, and RZA co-producing. Well, at least we know the music will be tight!

I leave you now with a clip of the campy, but oh so fantastic, nostalgia that is one of my favorite 80s movies, The Last Dragon:

Ridley Scott To Direct 'The Forever War'

I was reading Variety.com this morning when I came across this article breaking the news that director Ridley Scott would be returning to the sci-fi genre to helm Joe Haldeman's 1974 Hugo- and Nebula-award winning novel, "The Forever War." This will be Scott's first sci-fi film since directing Blade Runner in 1982. His previous sci-fi credit before that was as director of 1979's Alien.

Scott had originally sought to make TFW into a film 25 years ago after completing Blade Runner. Wow, I'm glad he didn't. I don't think TFW would have been as good a movie back then as BR turned out to be. But I *do* firmly believe TFW will be an awesome movie for the director to tackle now that he has both more experience and context in his favor (more on that in a moment).

Joe Haldeman is at the top of my short list of amazing sci-fi writers. His stories are so well-written and quick to read that he reminds me a lot of Robert A. Heinlein, especially the more militaristic aspects of his sci-fi creations. TFW was his first major breakthrough in 1974, though he had written several novels under a pseudonym before then. The novel is an allegory of the author's experiences in the Vietnam War, relating to the theme of a young, reluctant soldier returning home from war only to find that the world he once knew has changed drastically.

In TFW, however, the difference is that the young soldier is sent to a distant, intergalactic frontline where humanity is pitted in conflict against the mysterious Taurans. Using the time- and space-distorting properties of collapsars (stellar-mass black holes), humans can travel great distances across the universe. But because of the time dillation effects of such travel, while only a few days pass for the relativistic traveller, whole years go by back home on Earth. The conscripted protagonist is gone for only a year, but he returns to find that 27 years have passed on Earth. He is at once displaced and dismayed over the changes that have occurred since his departure, but more poignant are the friends and family he left behind who are now either deceased or greatly aged.

You can easily see how this theme applies to all wars, both real and imaginary. And in particular recent wars in America where soldiers return from the battlefield with an altered sense of reality and, sometimes, a twisted perspective on "civilian" life.

This is why I believe TFW will be a better film to be made now, rather than 25 years ago back in the 80s. Its story is more relative in today's terms, don't you think?

Anyway, I will be very interested to see the big-screen adaptation. Especially with such a cool veteran behind the lens like Ridley Scott. I mean, you can't ask for a better helmer than that!Source URL: https://bollywoodsexygirls2012.blogspot.com/search/label/Movie%20news

Thems Folk In Nippon Sho Iz Trippin!!!

In more wacky entertainment news from the Land of the Rising Sun -- oh wait, is there any other kind? -- seems some folks at the WB have gotten creative with the soon-to-be-released Blu-ray edition of the Ultimate Matrix collection. The set will consist of 7 discs, 4 of which will be the high-definition Blu-ray versions of the 3 movies, plus the Animatrix shorts. With the remaining 3 discs consisting of standard definition "making of" documentaries. Since I already have the Ultimate Collection on standard DVD, I would normally pass on this.

But that's just the tip of the iceberg! Because included with this set is a 2-foot scale model of Morpheus's ship, the Nebuchadnezzar, which collectors may use to store the discs in lieu of the standard storage box that's also included.

Of course, I would *never* collect something as gaudy as this, but you have to admit it's pretty damn sweet if you're into this sort of swag. And those worrying about the movies playing here in the U.S., don't. Although this set is only being offered in Japan, WB's Blu-ray movies share the same region coding in both Nippon and North America. So if, like me, you own a PS3 and you find yourself with an overwhelming desire to get your Neo on while rocking out aboard the Neb (in your acid-trip dreams, at least), then this set will bring you that much closer to your goal.

You can find the original scoop over at Gizmodo.com.

Oh Yeah, Baby!!! Who You Gonna Call?

Several months ago it was revealed that the next installment in the Ghostbusters film franchise was not going to be a film at all, but a kick-ass video game on all systems. The game was scripted and voiced by some of the original crew (sans Bill Murray) and is being developed by Terminal Reality for publisher Sierra. It's slated for a 2009 release to coincide with the 25th anniversary of the first film (has it been that long?).

Anyway, the rumor of an actual film sequel was squashed early on. Or was it? Looks like there may indeed be a third Ghostbusters after all! And better yet, they might be looking to reunite the original cast. Check out the news here.

I for one would love for this to happen. And I think it will. Of course, the original cast is a lot older now, not to mention fatter, so the rumor is that they might be training a new generation. Normally, I would say this sounds like a sucky idea. But since this is a comedy, I think it could work.

    Yay!!!!

Holy Crap! Another Riddick Movie(s)!!!

In an interview given to MTV News, Vin Diesel mentioned that the wheels have been set in motion to produce not just one, but TWO sequels to the much maligned Chronicles of Riddick franchise. According to Diesel:

"David Twowy right now is writing the scripts. The only question is whether we take a page from the ‘Lord of the Rings’ guys and try to shoot the two chapters at the same time. There are two more in mind."

Of course, the idea of a pair of sequels following the 2004 movie is no surprise to fans who can remember that this was originally planned as a trilogy all along. However, after the perceived dismal box office outing, many gave up hope of ever seeing a sequel (let alone two) being realized.

Looks like there's hope after all!

Now unlike most cynics, I actually *liked* the last movie. Yes, it took a huge departure from the style and feel of the original Pitch Black film which started the franchise, but I thought the hints were always there of a much larger, broader (in terms of scope) universe. Even the Pitch Black DVD hinted at this, with one of the special bonus features being a log of the bounty hunter, Johns, who tracks Riddick from one hell-hole world to another, always missing him at the last moment.

With Chronicles, what we got was an ambitious space opera of a sequel. Sure it had its bad moments (Thandie Newton was horribly misused, for one), but overall it was an interesting first attempt at an action sci-fi flick (Pitch Black, by comparison, was a horror sci-fi film in the same vein as the Aliens franchise).

People like to hate on Diesel and especially his Riddick bad-boy role, but I'm willing to give director David Twohy the benefit of the doubt. Both Diesel and Twohy have a strong vision of the franchise, and I get the feeling they'll be a lot more careful this time around translating that passion onto the big screen. I think the huge influx of money and studio pressure the last time left all parties involved a little flummoxed!

But that's okay, they'll get it right next time. Consider me there on opening day!
